Here’s my look back on the last twelve months and my thoughts on the Best of the year.
Coldplay’s “Ghost Stories”
“All These Things That I’ve Done” By The Killers
Best TV Program
“Newsroom” from HBO was full of dialogue without the normal gratuitous sex that you get these days. More shows like it should be made.
It’s a tie: "To make great art you have to know great art. He dropped out of the University of Chicago and sought to teach himself through great books and smart people." Wall Street Journal's Peggy Noonan on Director Mike Nichols who passed last week (The Pleasure of His Company)
"Entrepreneurs of life are those who assume a responsibility for a creative task, not as an assigned role, a routine function, or an inherited duty, but as a venture of faith, including risk and danger, in order to bring into the world something new and profitable for humankind. This is their calling from the great Creator." - Os Guinness
September 28th I walked the streets of the Latin Quarter in Paris with a new friend. He introduced me to the birthplaces of people and ideas that have shaped modern philosophy, theology, art and culture. He gave me more insight into my work in The Port Royal Society and after six hours with him, I learned I was not alone in my journey. Later that day I sat with my bride, Mark and Erika and had great wine and food in the light of the Eiffel Tower.
Venice, Italy was everything I hoped it would be and not the tourist trap I feared. Sitting with my family and friends in the late evenings under the Venetian sky was inspiring. While there are times and places where the tourist take over, we where able to escape the crowds and enjoy the sights, sounds and bells of the renaissance city.
Mount Evans in late October with John Pribble was the last climb of the year and my favorite. The snow added a new challenge and the vistas amazing. I enjoyed every climb this past year with my friends and son, but this climb was unique.
“The Long Journey Home” by Os Guinness was just the follow up I needed to my time in Paris. It reaffirmed the journey I was on. It is a great book for “seekers”.
Sitting quietly on the Appalachian Trail with my wife just listening to the wind blow through the trees.
Best “Proud Moment” (Sarah)
Celebrating my daughter graduating from high school a year early and attending college on a scholarship while running a business at the same time.
Best “Proud Moment” (Beau)
Watching my son take down a Bull Elk with a perfect bowshot. As we hunt, hike and explore together, I continue to watch him grow into a patient, thinking young man.
Best Show of Faith
Vicky Pike as she supported her daughter through her cancer treatments. I learnded a lot from her this year just watching.
The 1996 Vega Sicillia unico is still drinking great. Enjoyed it a few times this year.
In Venice we were introduced to a citris drink called Aperol. We enjoyed it for days. Mark, Erika, Danae and I sat and people watrched for hours as we sipped our Aperol.
